Community Endeavors

The Gary and Apolonia Stice ’Ohana is working with the community to provide planting, harvesting and marketing Native Hawaiian plants and other sustainable food sources.

Aquaponics System in Ka’u

In an effort to bring sustainably to remote communities in Hawai’I, the Gary and Apolonia Stice ‘Ohana is committed to establishing a practical and educational Aquaponics system in Ka’u.  The benefits of aquaponics have been well documented and include using 1/6 of the water to grow 8 times more food, using a natural fertilizer in the fish waste to grow a wide variety of plants and thereby producing food that is free of pesticides and herbicides, low energy consumption, and once set up, easy to maintain.  The vision of our foundation is to enable people in the community to learn the advantages of aquaponics and sustainability.  Courses will be provided that allow students and volunteers to participate with housing facilities provided.  As the program grows, The ‘Ohana will adapt and evolve with the growing needs of the community.

Agricultural Aquaponics Educational Opportunities

The Gary and Apolonia Stice Ohana will be offering internships, work/study programs and seminars for agricultural aquaponics education.

Housing can be provided on site for individuals and groups to learn about aquaponics, enabling them to bring their knowledge back to their communities.

Hāna & Waiohinu Farmers Market

The Gary and Apolonia Stice ’Ohana provides the facilities for two farmers markets. The first established market is in Hāna, Maui. With great results and community feedback, we recently established a second farmers market in Waiohinu on Hawai’i Island. These locations allow locals to reach both local customers and the tourist population.
